Sew your way over the rainbow with this eye-catching modern rainbow quilt pattern. It’s a great first pattern if you’re new to patchwork as it’s a pixel quilt, which means all you need to cut are simple squares of plain fabrics to piece up the quilt top.
Here’s how to make it…
60in square

Tip: Lay out your rows on a large surface or design wall before sewing them together
Arrange your squares into four sections, each twelve rows of twelve squares, referring to the Layout Diagram below. Sew the squares in each section into rows, pressing seams open or to one side. Sew the rows together to complete each section, carefully matching seams.

Sew the sections into pairs, pressing seams to opposite sides on each pair. Then sew the pairs together, carefully matching seams to complete the quilt top.
Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam allowance. Press the seam open.
Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
Quilt as desired. Sarah quilted simple straight lines about ½in apart, using a white cotton thread. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt to 60in square.
Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.
Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edges to finish.

This free rainbow quilt pattern is a joyful project that’s perfect for quilters of all levels, creating a bright and cheerful addition to your home.
